2009 shaping up to be the Year of Tiger

Opinion: While Padraig Harrington won two majors in 2008, the season will be remembered because of the loss of Tiger Woods.

Let the hype begin!

    Give the man a break.

He has not played in a long time. To win his first tournament the odds would be less than 50 percent even if he was  healthy and had prepared in other tournaments. After this layoff adjustments can only be made in real play, and will have to be made.

But the hype makes for a good story and  ratings.

Who are you kidding? All he did was show up and win the U.S. Open,  the hardest golf tourney of all every year, after having missed all tournaments since the Masters last year- and with a torn ACL and a fractured leg to boot!! Get serious will ya, the guy has the competitive drive and mental stamina to do damn well whatever he sets his mind to do. If only it was always that simple and easy for us all in the everyday real world, as Tiger makes it seem in his world on tour. His greatest competition on tour is Tiger himself! Harrington is a good player and may be on the verge of being a truly great one in history, but we won't know that for sure until he has to beat Tiger on the back nine on Sunday in a major. I'm sorry, but beating Sergio isn't anywhere near the same, LOL!! Sure he can destroy Sergio, but we'll see if he feels the intimidation factor paired with Tiger and his gallery. Also, one should be asking whatever happened to Phil, Ernie, Vijay, Retief, etc. With Tiger on the sideline healing post surgery, this was their best opportunity to shine and they blew it big time. They didn't even really register in the last two majors. Vijay didn't step up until the Fed Ex Cup playoffs and Phil didn't show up at all. All I know is I'm actually ready for golf again because it was boring as hell without Tiger in the mix- a very anticlimatic second half of the golfing season.

I am a serious Tiger fan, having followed him since before his first win in the Junior Amateur.  That said, I absolutely disagree with the idea that the second half of the season was a loss as is implied in the article.  Of course, we all want to see Tiger in action.  But he wasn't able to play.  Padraig winning two majors was great to see!  Whether Tiger was there or not, he did what he had to and won against the best players.  Tiger is probably the best player in history, but he is not the game.  He is one man, playing at an unbelievable level, and his career will end one day.  Golf will go on and, one day, another player of sublime skill will come along and erase Tiger's great records.  It always happens and always will.  The players of the future build their games on the base of the players past.  That's as it should be.  In the meantime, I plan to watch Tiger whenever he plays and to root for him to establish records of monumental proportion.  No sense making it easy for the future great player!
